Google Patent Search

It isn’t connected to the German Patent office, but we found another quite interesting opportunity to search for patents: Google Patent Search. This new system allows you to search within the full text of the U.S. patent corpus and find patents that interest you. The patents come from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). They made available over 7 million patents and over a million patent applications. You can search for a patent using the patent number, the name of the inventor or an assignee. You have also the possibility to search via the classification codes of USPTO and via the international classification codes.
Today, the program doesn’t include international patents, but Google looks forward to expanding the coverage in the future. They hope to provide patents in different languages to users worldwide.

Question C.

Markets and companies are subject to a fast change of products and competitors. Especially for companies that act within markets that have short product life cycles such as IT, pharmaceutical or electronic supplies it is very helpful to have a department of competitive intelligence in house. Of course it sounds very strange to employ people without being sure about the outcome. But all the strategic decisions which have to be done by de management can just be as good as the information they are based upon.

Building up a department of competitive intelligence doesn´t arise high costs and the benefits will be priceless. There has to be a well trained person, well trained in terms of knowing relevant databases and having the methodology to perform professional searches. Also the person should have knowledge of the market and the company.

For implementing competitive intelligence strategy in a company the following actions could be taken.

First of all there needs to be profiling of competitors. This means facts about the company, intentions, reaction profiles and also possible threads and opportunities.

Another important field especially when thinking about launching a new product would be analysis of opportunities and risks. This also should be considered for approaching to new sales markets or new sales regions.

Something a competitive intelligence officer should do constantly is the scanning of environment. In these section new suppliers, products, services, technologies, subsidies, alliances etc. should be observed. This can be achieved best by SDI-Services, also known as Alert-Service, Selective Dissemination of Information Service or Current-Awareness-Service. Many trustworthy database suppliers like GBI-Genios offer such services. Once an inquiry about the field of interest was send to the database and the CI officer can be sure to get the proper information with this inquiry there is the possibility to subscribe to this inquiry. With subscribing to this service you get messages, if there is something new happening in your field of interest. It works like a newsletter. The CI officer always has the latest information with very little effort and the costs are reasonable for a company.

Related with scanning of environment is monitoring of issues. It could also be implemented with a SDI-Service. The inquiries stated for this field should be issues that could be relevant for the own company. For example if you have a pharmaceutical company it could be also interesting to see what is new in the nourishment industry, because they are quite similar.

Another possibility is to have satisfactory surveys. The customers of your own company and those of your competitors can be questioned. This gives a lot of helpful information. Although the efforts, financial as well as organizational are very high.

The company should also take an examination of its own market positioning into account. The own perception of the company is to be compared with perception of competitors and customer. Also there is the question of the coverage of customer needs. This point can be connected with surveys and is not very easy to answer, but can be very helpful for management decisions.

The points mentioned above are part of the concept Rainer Michaeli introduced in his publication “Competitive Intelligence” (2005, Springer Verlag Heidelberg, ISBN: 3540030816). Rainer Michaeli is specialized in competitive intelligence services and strategy-consulting. He is member of the SCIP ( Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals) the global network of market and competitive researcher.

First of all I would explain the company what Competitive Intelligence exactly is, which are advantages of CI and convince them why they need a Competitive Intelligence conception and how they get it.

Competitive Intelligence is the systematic process of information retrieval and information analysis about development on markets, competition, industrial sectors, patents, technologies, competitive products and expectations of customers.
In addition CI has usually future oriented statements about competitive positioning, competitive intentions and competitive strategies. Also it is the result of the process about required knowledge on market and competition. CI concentrates of main applications like to find out facts, intentions, threats and opportunities of the competitor, current and future technologies, analysis of opportunities and risks of a new product and the environment of own company. So the own company gets an impression about the competition and other things of its environment and can make better decisions.

Nowadays companies have a rapid change of products and competitors. The development of new technologies or inventions takes time and is sometimes quiet expensive. It would be a failure of a new technology, if the competitor came a few days earlier with the same invention. So it is important to know as much as possible about competitions and markets, that right decisions can made by manager in time based on relevant legal information of the competitor. That’s why Competitive Intelligence also makes statements on the expected effects on the own company and suggests recommendations for decisions.

The most information about the competition can get from public source information or visible web, which can be quiet useful for CI. But there is also quality information in relevant databases, which is important for better decision making for the according company. Unfortunately people don’t know much about professional information broking and haven’t enough skills of searching for information in databases. So it would be good if some employee get a training of professional search, that in own company people can do CI. The Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals offer training and consulting about professional searching in deep web. Own employees with good searching skills is a solution for middle class and big companies. Smaller firms can do outsourcing and order or hire a CI professional, who can search for relevant information and is a consultant for decision making.
Finally Competitive Intelligence skills can become as a chance of survival for some companies, because a right decision depends on right and relevant information for companies.

What is Competitive Intelligence (CI), why is so important for your company and how can you establish it?

Your company’s success is important to you. So, you have to start using the competitive intelligence technique. Company leaders have to understand how important a continuously view on their competitors are. They need an understanding of what their competitors are likely to do in the near future. Your "competitors" are those firms which you consider rivals in business, and with whom you compete for market share. As a business owner, you need to constantly analyze the existing market for any relevant changes. The information you find and interpret is essential to your survival. To recognize the advantages of using CI is important for the growing of the company. CI means gathering, analysing, and managing any combination of Data, Information, and Knowledge concerning the business environment in which your company operates. For example information about competitors, any relevant changes to the legal aspects of your industry or regulations, and technology that are typically used in your industry.

The primary role of CI is strategic early warning. It means that you as a business owner see weak signals and early trends that may reveal potential changes before they become obvious to others. This gives you great advantages on the market. Without the proper knowledge to make any business decisions, you are at risk for losing money. Also, if you fail to take advantage of a current trend, your competitors could reap the benefits and you’ll be left out. CI can support better decision making. It provides you, the leader of the company, with intelligence relevant to your situation.

How do you get this important information? There are a lot of useful information on the internet, the so called visible web. Information can be found on more than just the company’s website if it is a public company. You can check out newspapers and magazines for information, interviews, and news about the company. Or take a look on product review sites. But he most important information are available though the so called invisible web. This content is only available though professional databases like GBI/GENIOS or LexisLexis.
It is quite important to search the right way and to filter the information. Therefore you need a professional standard.

How can you establish CI in your company? If the company is big and you have the right resources and enough employees, you can do the research “in house”. It means you can do CI on your own. If you don’t have enough resources to spare one of your employees, you have the opportunity to outsource it.

For establishing CI “in house”, you have to train at least one employee on the art of competitive intelligence. This employee should be selected by his abilities. He should be an efficient researcher and he should have the ability to perform detailed analysis on any data he finds. You can also form a committee or group where each member performs a specific task related to competitive intelligence. To improve the abilities of your employees, working on CI, you can hire individual companies to perform competitive intelligence training. This trainings cover things like the best methods for research, techniques for data analysis, how to organize the data and to generate reports.
As already mentioned you may not have the time or the resources to go through the process yourself. So you have the possibility to outsource CI. There are many companies and individuals who specialize in competitive intelligence and can provide this service for you. The advantage of outsourcing is that you don’t need to worry about things like the right resources and abilities of the researchers. The specialised companies or individual CI specialists guarantee a high standard CI.

If you use CI you will have great advantages on the market and you can establish your company. The high value information about your competitors and your marked guarantees you a better business performance.
